Summary:
Coal miners Eloy Cruz (left) and his brother-in-law Leandro Vigil pose near the entrance to the Frederick Mine in Valdez (Las Animas County), Colorado. Eloy wears a jacket, a cap with a battery operated lantern, safety boots and holds a bucket and a lantern. He has a brass identification tag. Leandro wears similar clothes but wears a sweater and holds a hand pick and lantern

From inventory: "Left to right: Eloy Cruz and his brother-in-law Leandro Vigil at the entrance of the Valdez (Frederick) Mine in Southern Colorado. The mine began in 1907 and closed in 1961. Both men are wearing a battery operated lantern that mounts to the plate on their cap. The have hard-toed shoes. Eloy has a brass tag stamped with an identifying number visible at his waist. The miner placed a tag on each car he loaded for credit. The tag was also used to identify him in the event of an accident." (Courtesy of Hispanic Pioneers in Colorado and New Mexico).
