Notes

Summary:
View of the Gallegos Mercantile and Hotel on the plaza in San Luis, (Costilla County), Colorado. The two story stone building, owned by José Presentación "J.P." Gallegos, was also the telegraph and post office. The front of the building has a wooden false front parapet. Signs on the building read: "J.P. Gallegos." A two story adobe and brick building with a covered two story porch is next door. Hispanic American men and horse-drawn wagon are near the buildings.

General Note:
From inventory: "Built between 1900 - 1905, the Gallegos Mercantile and Hotel was owned by José Presentación "J.P" Gallegos. The building was constructed with stone rather than the typical Southwest adobe that prevailed in the old plaza. The hotel also served as a telegraph and post office. The building was unfortunately destroyed by a fire about 1925. " (Hispanic Pioneers in Colorado and New Mexico, Colorado Society of Hispanic Genealogy, p. 10).
