Cost of food items purchased
normally accounts for a sizable
dent in the family budget. What
portion of that expense a typical
Denver nisei family spends, on
imported Japanese food items, de-
pends on its taste, whether their
parents reside with them, and other
variables.
In Canada, thanks to the govern-
ment's newly initiated austerity
program, international trade will
be one of the areas affected. Speci-
fically, duties on imported pro-
ducts will be increased. This gov-
ernment action affects many Ja-
panese families there because such
imported items as shoyu, and other
bottled, canned and packaged food
items brought in from Japan will
be subject to a 5% surcharge. A
Japanese food store owner inTor-
onto figured it out this week and
decided that, at once, price on
many such items will be increas-
ed by as much as 20%. A bottle
of shoyu which used to sell at
$2.00, will cost $2.40.

Derby Sophomore Coed Plays Role Of
Little Eva" In University Production
Boulder-Sue Yamamoto, sopho-
more co-ed at CU summer ses-
sion, played the role of Little
Eva in the summer theater pro-
duction of the operetta, "The King
and I", July 13-15 in the Folsom
Stadium Theater.
She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Henry Yamamoto of Derby.
Among production problems
which arose in this show was that
of creating simulated rain for the
Oriental ballet scene. Seldon
Faulkner, director, solved it when
he remembered seeing a perfor-
mance of Noh dance in Japan last
year. So he wrote to Jimmie Fuku-
zaki in Japan, entertainment di-
rector for U.S. 5th Air Force,
who in turn, shipped to Boulder
roles of spider thread. This equip-
ment produced the effect of rain
for Noh dance, and also for the
"King and I production.

THE FORUM
A Los Angeles bilingual news-
paper recently questioned the value
of the National JACL project to
publish the history of Japanese in
America, 1860-1960, a project for
which nearly $110,000 has been
solicited in contributions and pled-
ges, a project to be prepared in
the self-same city, at UCLA.
The publication suggested that
nothing can come of this project,
save voluminous, boring, encyclo-
pedic chronology of Japanese im-
migration to the U.S. Unlikely, but
if true, a costly bore, for its
estimated publication cost is $300,
000. In any event, the criticism
seems premature, since its publi-
cation may be three to four years
away.
In the early 1950s, historian
Oscar Handlin published a book,
"The Uprooted*', a story about
immigrants uprooted from their
familiar homelands and cultures of
Europe to be figuratively trans-
planted in America.
The author labored for 15 years,
searching, collecting, document-
ing, pondering and writing the saga.
"Once I thought to write a his-
tory of immigrants In America,
he explained. "Then I discovered
that the immigrants were Ameri-
can history."
"Historically, immigrants al-
tered America,'' observed Hand-
lin, the son of Russian immigrant
parents. "But America also al-
tered the immigrants. For that
notable work, wherein he examined
the role of immigration in Ameri-
can culture, and sought to discover
the meaning of their experience, he
received the coveted Pulitzer
Prize.
The nature of the project being
what it is an historical account-
die finished product may well be
filled with names, prefectures of
the isseis' origin, and dates. But
more, the League's membership
may expect that the publication
will indicate the meaning of die
experience of Japanese immi-
grants who were twice uprooted,
first from their homeland, and
second, by evacuation.

rado, he works for the Adams
