PRICELESS PAINTINGS
Visitor Owner Of
Art experts sometimes describe
Ukiyoe, a form of ancient Japanese
art, as paintings which give view-
ers the impression of figures
which float in the air."
A Denver visitor, Tokichi Sakai

collection of the fabulous Ukiyoe
paintings by Hokusai, Hiroshige
and others. He has shown a selec-
tion of them, in Paris last year,
and more recently on the East
coast. Sakai came here from Kan-

THE FORUM
Three pre-tested basic methods
are available for masterminding
the common, pre-holiday family
pursuit the preparation and mail-
ing of Christmas cards. v
This is the simplest method,
sentiment aside: buy, stamped, re-
turn-addressed envelopes with
sender's name imprinted on en-
closures. Mailed unsealed, they're
economical. A family using this
method might even be able to toss
the whole finished stack to the post
office early in December.
Second method is disorderly. It
means thumbing through incom-
plete lists of addressees, pain-
stakingly plodding over the task,
fingering over too many, or an
insufficient supply of cards, and
barely mailing them out before
Christmas Eve,
Third method balances expedit-
ious mailing with attachment of
maximum sentiment to each item
of effort. First lady of the house-
hold might divide the t^sk among
her loyal household subjects'- one
to write return addresses only on
envelopes, another to inscribe
sender's name on cards, another to
write receiver's name on same.
The first lady, thoughtfully pre-
pared with indexed list of cards
sent and received on last Christ-
mas, can mastermind the whole
enterprise with maximum dispatch
and minimum delay.

Even an avid collector with an
ample bank account, ordinarily,
cannot today purchase Ukiyoes in
the open art markets. In the in-
stance of the visitor in Denver,
his great grandfather, Rihei Sakai,
a samurai in the service of Lord
Mizuno of Matsumoto clan, first
began the family collection back
in the early 1800's. In fact, he
sat for a portrait painted by Hiro-
shige.
Not surprising, then, that the sa-
murai's great grandson, the visitor
in Denver, is president of Japan
Association of Ukiyoe. Sakai, on
inspecting the Ukiyoe paintings at
Denver Art Museum yesterday,
suggested to curators there that
the original Ukiyoes hung there,
together with copies, be separate-
ly displayed.

Gap Of Averages
Seen Increasing
A glance at comparative aver-
ages bowled, back in mid-Sept. and
then currently, shows at least one
agreement among ladies and
gentlemen bowlers in the Simpson
League. The gaps between bottom
and top of both rosters are increas-
ing.
Weekly tabulations maintained
by Meach and Yuki Nogami shows
that this spread between bottom
and top male player's averages and
handicaps increased, respectively,
from 59 up to 71, and from,39
up to 47. These same changes in
the women's division increased,
respectively, from 67 up to 96,
and from 45 up to 64.
Adequate explanation for these
changes can be made only by
examining changes in the averages
and handicaps of all 77 men and
40-odd women players.
