Pains To Aid War Memorial Fund Drive

Nisei War Memorial Fund. They

Graduating Seniors Win Scholarships
To Enroll In Elite Eastern Colleges
James Suekama, West High's
senior class valedictorian, top
scholar of his class, received
$2,000 scholarship from Colum-
bia Univ. in New York City. Addi-
tionally, he received a Gates Rub-
ber Co. scholarship valued at an
amount up to $1,000.
Suekama, who compiled a 4.0
grade point, is editor of the
school's student newspaper and
won varsity letter as a backstroke
swimmer. He is the son of the Sam
Suekamas of 1225 Santa Fe Dr.
Stanley Doida, graduating sen-
ior at East High, received an $800
scholarship and a $900 grant
from Knox College in Galesburg,
111. The grant, administered by the
college, is provided by the U.S.
Dept, of Health Education and Wel-
fares Student National Defense
Loan Program.
He is the son of the Sam Doi-
das of 3535 Elm st.
GEORGE FUJIMOTO'S
MOTHER PASSES AWAY
Mrs. Tsune Fujimoto of Oak-
land, Calif., mother of George
Fujimoto, died last week. She is
also survived by her husband,
Tsunesuke Fujimoto of Oakland.

GIVES DEMONSTRATION
Ho-un Ohara, outstanding auth-
ority on ikebana, is to present a
demonstration at Phipps auditor-
ium. The demonstration will be
held at 1 p.m, on Monday, May 6.
Public is invited to attend. Ad-
mission charge will be $2.00. The
artists appearance is sponsored
by the Ikebana International or-
ganization.

City. Sessions began this week.
ERECT LUXURY HOTEL
IN LOS ANGELES
A new $2,000,000 hotel is to be
erected in the heart of the old
Japanese shopping area in down-
town Los Angeles, it was an-
nounced by Taul Watanabe, at-
torney, who also has interests
in Denver area enterprises.
One-half of construction finance
for the hotel will be furnished by
the Tokyo Bank of Calif., he said.

Sunday, May 5, is the traditional
gogatsuno seldcu, BoysDay.Kiichi
Nakayama, owner of Osaka-ya, is
preparing special kashiwa mochi
for Ms customers. The Osaka-ya
at 1915 Lawrence st. will be open
all day this Sunday.
USE NEW INSTRUMENT IN
OPTOMETRISTS OFFICE
One of the first electric tono-
meter, said to be in use in the
state, has been installed in the of-
fice of file optometrist in Brigh-
ton, Dr. Ron Fair. It is used to
detect glaucoma. .
Mrs. Yoshiko Qkamoto is secre-
tary in the optometrist's office.

CARNATION GROWER EXPANDS FACILITIES
Brighton WMle nisei invest-
ment of money and know-how in
southern California floral indus-
try is sizable, extent of Colo-
rado's nisei interest in this acti-
vity is said to be relatively minor.
Lf this is so, an exception is to
be found in the activities of Brigh-
ton Florist and Nursery operated
by Mr. and Mrs. Jim Kiyoto and
her mother, Mrs. LillyKobayasM.
Modernized and expanded green-
house, equipped with modern heat-
ing devices and fiberglass roof,
for example, houses 7,500 square
feet of floral plants, primarily car-
nations.
For decades, in Los Angeles,
a major assignment of many nisei
flower growers and floral design-
ers has' been to decorate floats
for the annualTournament of Roses
parade.
Oldtimers welcomed the "home-
town boy who made good" at dinner
last week-end at the Akebono.
Shgemichi Ukihashi, chief of
sales dept, of Western Sales Co. of
Tokyo, enroute toDusseldorf, Ger-
many, tarried in Denver to look
up his old friends. In the early
1920s he clerked at the old S.
Ban Co.s Japanese food store
here, and also served as secre-
tary at the old Buddhist Church
when it was located on Market st.
Many of his old friends had died,
or had moved away, but a score or
more were present at the dinner.

bazaar Sat., May 4, at Buddhist
Church said, in addition to delic-
ious Japanese food, native cos-
tumes and dolls will be displayed
and a Japanese movie will be
shown.
Mrs. Gladys Taniwaki is In
charge of the movie, odorr and ka-
buki costume show. Henry Suzuki
is in charge of display of samurai
costumes, Japanese musical in-
struments, Boys Day dolls, and
brush-paintings by Mrs. Yuri
Nodas class.
The chefs, Oski Taniwaki, Min
Yasui, John Noguchi, MikeTashiro
and their associates are to pre-
pare menu wMch includes beef
teriyaki, rice, crab and cucum-
ber simomono, inarizushi and
makizushi and kamaboko. Haruko
Kobayashi is in charge of cakes
and manju at the booth. Bazaar
tickets will be sold at the door,
$1.75 for adults and $1.25 for
cMIdren.
JAPAN'S NEW ENVOY to U.S.,
Ambassador Ryuji Takeuchi re-
cently arrived in Washington. His
predecessor, Koichiro Asakai, had
served in the position for six
years.
On returning to Tokyo, Asakai
had said that while the U.S. rated
Japan high for its economic pro-
wess, it has reservations as to
whether it can depend on Japan's
political intentions.
CONDUCT SERVICE
FOR MRS. CHIKUMA
Funeral services were conduct-
ed Tuesday, for the late Mrs.
Chizuru CMkuma, who died last
weekend at St. Lukes Hospital.
She is survived by her husband.
Bill Chikuma of 3157 Gaylord st.,
and their childreh, Dale, Mark
and Faye; her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Suezo Yamaguchi of Hen-
derson; brothers, Tadashi and
George; sisters, Mrs. Nancy Ouye
of Chicago, and Joan Tawara of
Denver. Services were at Budd-
hist Church and burial was at
Highland Garden.

Granada Mrs. Harry Hirose
was elected secretary of the Gran-
ada PTA. Mrs. Hirose and other
officers will be installed in their
offices in May.

AIDS MINES OVER REGIS
Golden Floyd Ito cracked a
home run last week to lead Colo-
rado School of Mines, 5-2 over
Regis College.
Choose Miss Bussei
Out in Los Angeles last week,
the Miss Bussei of 1963 was chosen
at the 21st annual YBL conference.
Judges were asked to make their
selection from among five candi-
dates, ages 18 to 21, all coeds
at the several colleges, all beau-
tiful, each one an accomplished
Bussei and church worker. The
judges were advised that weighting
of their selection should be based
on the candidates' knowledge of
Buddhism, and poise and charac-
ter, 35% each; and appearance,
30%.
Thus instructed, the judges
selected as Miss Bussei, 21-year-
old Jean Masala of Newcastle in
northern Calif., business major at
Sierra College.
Niseis Aiding
Foundation Prograa
Brighton Commercial firms,
organizations and individuals have
contributed a total of $1500 to the
Scholarship Foundation, it was an-
nounced by Judge Oyer G. Leary,
president of the foundation.
The foundation hopes to reach the
$2500 goal so that it can award
10 scholarships, each valued at
$250.
Recent donors include Brighton
Japanese American Assn, and Dr.
Kenneth Uyehara.
Over $500,000 In
Two Funds Of League
San Francisco A grand total of
$214,289.31 was received as of
last week in donations for the Na-
tional JACL history project, the
headquarters announced.
The four-year project is being
undertaken by Dr. Scott Miya-
kawa and his staff at UCLA in Los
Angeles.
A separate fund project of Na-
tional JACL, the endowment fund,
now stands at $300,764.65, it was
announced by fund chairman, Dr.
George Miyake.
ASSOCIATE PROVOST
OF CU GOING TO NYU
Boulder Dr. James I. Doi,
40, associate provost of CU, is
resigning June 30 to assume posi-
tion of director of institutional
research and professor of educa-
tion at New York University.
Although one of many nisei on
American collegiate faculty, Pro-
fessor Doi is one of few nisei
educators occupying the adminis-
trative post of associate provost
on any campus.
