THE FORUM
>>
Even as JACL's expansive his-
tory of the issei is being prepar-y
ed at UCLA, the Canadian Japanes^
also have been working on the stor^
of their issei. This Japanese
Canadian Citizens Assn* project
Is financed on a modest budget, to
date, of less than $25,000.
Meanwhile, a history of the Chin-
ese in U.S which parallels the
lives of isseis in certain respects,
was published last year by theUniv.
of Wash. Press in Seattle.
Its author is Dr* S. W. Kung
of the Central Trust of China in
New York City. Its full title is
"Chinese in American Life-Some
Aspects of Their History, Status,
Problems, and Contributions."
Dr. Kung writes with pride in
the contributions the Chinese have
made to many aspects of American
life. For example, he cites that
more than 1,100 Chinese and Chin-
ese American scholars are mem-
bers of faculties of U.S, colleges
and universities, about half of
whom are teaching, while others
are in research functions. He does
not cite the proportion of 1,100
who are American-born.
Even so, the author sounds
Weary-hearted about the sum of his
countrymen's experiences intheU,
S, A clue may lie in the conclud-
ing chapter of his book where he
says: "it (the history of Chin-
ese immigration) has been one of
sad struggle against apparently re-
lentless obstacles.*
Obstacles, however, were com-
mon experiences of immigrants
from nearly all countries, not the
exclusive experience of nationals
from a particular country.

FLOUNDERING BALLERINAS
BALLERINAS meditate like
Zen Buddhist students
at a temple, another
important phase in
building up the character
of a Tachibana ballerina
(opposite page).
MISS AKIKO TACHI-
BANA, one of Japans
noted ballerinas, who has
been honored with
the Buyo Geijutsu-sho.
jgALLET is one of the newer western
arts which the Japanese have taken
to like ducks take to water. But un-
like the ducks, the Japanese, lacking
the physique of their Occidental
counterparts, are still floundering about
the stage and studio. The end re-
sult: a sad and tragic attempt, despite
E for effort and enthusiasm, to
adapt an art which simply is better
left to the birds of the West.
Nevertheless ballet in Japan is here
to stay. And as long as it isto make
the best of a bad situationits ex-
ponents are trying to blend and mould
it into the Japanese environment.
An exponent of this theory is Akiko
Tachibana, one of Japans noted bal-
lerinas, recently honored with the
Buyo-Geijitsu-sho or Dancing Arts
Award for 1963.
