New Era For Japanese Methodist Churches
Next to the last session of the
86-year-old Japanese Methodist
conference adjourned last week in
Los Angeles, where Simpson
Church delegates included the
Rev. Paul Hagiya and Jonathan
Fujita. Both pastors were reas-
signed to this church.
Final meeting of the conference
will be held next May in San Fran-
cisco, where the 32-church con-
ference originated with three issei
Methodists in 1876. At the close
of that forthcoming meeting, the 32
churches and their nearly 6,500
members will join six Methodist
conferences in their own areas.
The conference just concluded
had only 29 ministers. They in-
cluded one new pastor, the Rev.
Mike Morizono, who graduated in
June from Pacific School of Re-
ligion in Berkeley, Calif., and was
promptly assigned to become pas-
tor of the church in Santa Maria,
Calif.

Hagiya explained, will Join the
Rocky Mtn. Methodist Conference,
and will send delegates to its ses-
sion next June.
Ttuabs Up On Exhibit, But Down On Fill
In New York City's Asia House
last week, the viewing public and
critics generally praised the ex-
hibit of 70 statues of Buddha;
while in San Francisco, a pre-
view of the new Daiei film spec-
tacle, "Buddha," was roundlydis-
approved by Buddhist leaders.
The statues from the Harvard
museum were representative of the
works from many Near East and
Far Eastern countries including
pieces from Nepal, India, China
and Japan. A distinction between
Japanese statues of Buddha and
those from many other Asiatic
countries, critics noted, was in the
fact that while the latter empha-
sized the religious leader's
ethereal and spiritual qualities,
Japan's statues of Buddha empha-
sized the sense of his spiritual
power. Hence, his face is fuller
than those, for example, which
were made in Nepal, or China.
Meanwhile in San Francisco,
Shinsho Hanayama, bishop of 55
Buddhist churches and 80,000
members in the U.S. formally dis-
approved file film. He objected to
its distortion of Buddhism and
over-emphasis on sex. United Ar-
tist Corp, is distributor of this
film whose producer, Daiei, re-
ceived advise on its production
from many eminent Japanese Bud-
dhist scholars.

8REUERY TO EXPERIMENT NITH RICE FIELDS
Coors Brewery of Golden is ex-
perimenting with production of rice
in Grand Valley on the western
slope, and later in Arkansas Val-
ley.
President William Coors of the
company said his firm will buy this
year 75 million pounds of short-
grained rice, from Australia and
Mexico, as well as from Calif.,
Tex., La. and Ark.
Rice can be grown, Coors ex-
plained, in reclaimed alkaline land
found in many parts of Colorado.
Such land is virtually useless for
ordinary farming purposes.
The company's experiments in
production of short-grained rice,
he said, became necessary because
its availability in the market is
diminishing, primarily because
American housewives prefer
whole-grained, plump rice.

Band Takes Trip To Old Mexico
THE FORUM
The Japanese immigrants to
foreign lands probably cannot
match either the estimated 14*5
millions of Chinese, or their esti-
mated foreign investmentsofsome
$630,000,000.
Continuing the notes begun here
last week on Dr. S. W. Kungs
1>ook, Chinese in American Life,
he notes that the bulk of Chinese
emigration, initially, was to the,
southeast Asiatic countries, more
easily accessible to them than
their migration to North and South
America. There is Singapore, for
example, 76% of the population
is Chinese. In fact, about 76% of
the 14.5 millions reside in south-
east Asia.
Their estimated current popula-
tion in North, Central and South
America, is on a smaller scale -
probably some 33,000 in Canada,
which approximates current
Japanese Canadian population;
about the same number in troubled
Cuba, a third of whom live in
'-Havana;. 13,000 in Jamaica; 5,000
in Brazil, mostly in Sao Paolo
where Brazilian Japanese are*
largely reside; and in lesser num-
bers in other Central and South
American countries._
