GIBRALTAR ASSOCIATION OPEN FOR BUSINESS
The long-awaited opening day of
Gibraltar Savings and Loan Assn. ,
in its spanking new building at
1905 E. Colfax ave. occurred on
July 1.
Sam Kumagai, treasurer, said
Review Policy
State Democratic party chair-
man, Robert Maytag, has urged
his local party organizations to re-
assess its policy toward ethnic
minorities for evidences of racial
discrimination. Maytag proposed
that the partys units in the local
communities enlist leaders of the
various minority groups into posi-
tions of importance in their organi-
zations.
VIOLATIONS
In Los Angeles, a druggist, Leo
Saito, was charged by the State
Welfare Dept, with over-charging
on sales of drugs to welfare re-
cipients in the amount of $18,000
for an unstated period of time.
State agency said 12% of this
sum represented over charges.
Hootenanny!
A rousing Hootenanny session,
picnic meal and a round of putt-
putt golfing drew a crowd of Bus-
seis and their friends Saturday
to Sloans Lake. The outing was
sponsored by the Denver YBA.
The Hootenanny session was led
by Kay Mura and Janet Okamura.
Patty Tsukamoto and Judy Taka-
hashi were in charge of the food.
COLONEL ON THE HOVE
public is invited to visit and to

counts and deposits are being ac-
cepted. Mrs. Virginia Kile is ex-
ecutive vice-president and man-
ager. Carol Uyemura, daughter of
the Joe Uyemuras, is a teller.
The establishment is open for
business on Saturdays, 9 a.m. to
1 p.m., during a two-week grand
opening period. Normally, it is
open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays
through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to
7 p.m. on Fridays.
SURVEY USES MADE OF
LIBRARY SERVICES
A survey is being conducted on a
sample basis among residents in
the Denver metropolitan area to
determine the uses being made of
its libraries. Mrs. Lily Ariki is a
member of the group conducting in-
terviews for this purpose. The co-
operative survey is being conduct-
ed for ten libraries of Denver,
Adams, Arapahoe and Jefferson
counties.

Honolulu, pastor of the Pearl City

should. He was the Capt. Hiro Hi-
guchi, chaplain of the 442nd Combat
Regiment in World War II, reci-
pient of the Legion of Merit.
Just prior to his coming here,
die visitor had been in Thailand
where SEATO military exercises
were conducted (Southeast Asia
Treaty Organizations), an estab-
lishment to which theU.S. belongs.
During die military exercises
there, die pastor himself exercised
his other role, as Colonel Higuchi,
chaplain of the 9th Corps, U.S.
Army, Okinawa. Okinawa? Thats
where his reserve army commis-
sion directed him, and from there,
to Thailand,

Three of the 67 persons who
renewed their memberships during
the first half of June in the Na-
tional JACL 1000 Club were from
the Mountain Plains area, San
Francisco headquarters of the
League reported.
They were, from San Luis Val-
ley chapter, Charles Hayashida for
12th year, Mike Mizokami and
Harry Sumida for the tenth year.
They live in Blanca. InDenver, Sam
Kumagai became a member for the
fifth year.'
Call In El Paso
Summary of programs of the
Buddhist church follows:
The Rev. Noboru Tsunoda was
to have returned last week-end
from an extended trip through New
Mexico and west Texas. It includ-
ed a visit at one of the U.S. mili-
tary bases near El Paso, where a
large group of military personnel
from Japan were undergoing train-
ing. Arrangements for the visit
were made by Dr. S. Furugochi,
physician in El Paso.
The priest was to have departed
early this week to visit with church
members in the Sedgwick, Colo.,
and Scottsbluff, Nebr., areas.
Annual Obon festival and dance
will begin at 8 p.m, on Sunday,
July 14* Hoyo service will begin at
2 p.m.
General chairmen of the festi-
val is Takeshi Nakata and James
Kanemoto.
Key officials of the festival in-
clude Nobuye Tsushima and Mata-
jiro Watada. At Fort Lupton Bud-
dhist church, hoyo and obon festi-
val is scheduled to be held on
Sunday, July 21, at 7 p.m.

Jane Okubo, formerly of Denver,
and now of Los Angeles, is a
summer visitor at the home of her
brother's family, the Henry Okubos
of Littleton.

Yosh and Jane Tokutomi and
their children from Sunnyvale,
Calif., have been visiting with J ohn
and Grace Noguchis. Mrs. Toku-
tomi, formerly of Denver, and Mrs.

Nichibei Times of San Francis-
co reports that Mrs. ShizukoTani-
guchi, 63, of Billings, Mont., may
be able to fulfill her long-sought
wish to visit her aging parents
in Japan.
The trip would be a gift from
her daughter, Mary Taniguchi of
San Leandro, Calif., who won
$28,000 in the Irish Sweepstakes.
She owned the lucky ticket on a
horse named Tiger which came
in third, recently, in Dublin.
"I remember buying a Sweep-
stakes ticket at a bowling alley,
she recalled, "and forgot about
it until a San Francisco newspaper
reporter called me.
Miss Taniguchi proposes to split
the winnings three ways a due
portion to taxes, a sum to pay off
mortgage on her home, and an
amount to enable her mother to
take her trip.
George Kawamoto of Denver,
formerly of Hardin, Mont., recall-
ed that die Taniguchis had operat-
ed a restaurant in Billings.

Genesee Park To Be
"Site Of Outing
f The YBL picnic will be held
Aug. 18, beginning at 11 a.m., at
' Genesee park, according to Ted
Vjsumura, who was placed in charge

So Tsumura will call a preli-
minary committee meeting Fri.,
Aug. 2, at Brighton Buddhist

ship awards to die graduating high

Now the college graduates, per-

tion which appears to have merit.
Their suggestion amounts to this:

graduates in a similarly selective
manner?

SHE FEELS SORRY FOR
(MANY) AMERICAN MEN
Miss Mariko Suda of Japan, stu-
dent at Boston University, is giv-
ing talks this summer before Colo-
rado's Rotary Clubs.
She remarked at a club lunch-
eon last week in Brighton that
Japan's girls retain their femin-
inity, but that (many) American
girls dont. Hence, she felt sorry
for (many) American men.

Priest Completes Study At Sealnary
Dr. Sho-yu Hanayama, 32, was a
recent visitor at the Buddhist
Church where he met with its mem-
bers. The son of the Rev. Shin-
sho Hanayama of San Francisco
who is the Bishop of Buddhist
Churches of America, young Dr.
Hanayama completed a year's
study with a group of Christian
teachers and pastors at Union
Theological Seminary in New York
City.
He is a graduate of Tokyo Uni-
versity, where he majored in edu-
cational history. The Buddhist
scholar will be a research as-
sociate next autumn in the depart-
ment of India studies atUniversity
of Wisconsin.

Many Gases, Players, Scores To Handle
Probably between 150 and 180
players, coaches and team re-
presentatives, scattered on fields
between Denver and Greeley, have
been playing the NCNBL baseball
schedule each Sunday since May.
That's a lot of games and scores
and such to mastermind; and that,
basically, Is the function of the
league's Pres. Eugene Tochihara
and his cabinet officers.
The senior and pee wee divisions
began their second round of play
last Sunday.
Senior division's team repre-
sentatives include: Busseis, Floyd
Ito, player-manager; Mile Hi Mer-
chants, co-captains, Justin Kitsu-
kata and Tochihara; Welby, Dave
Tagawa and Dick Sato; Simpson
church. Tootsie Tsutsui and Mark
Hagiya. The name of Greeley's
team rep. was not immediately
available. (
Pee wee division's race for the
8 to 14 year-olds was all tied up
at the end of the first round. Fort
Lupton, Brighton and the Mer-
chants had each won five games,
lost one.
The division's team representa-
tives include: Fort Lupton, Sam
Okamoto and Sameto Hisamoto;
Greeley, Harold and Tiny Tate-
yama; Bussei Reds, Kay Nitta and
Art Yoshimura. Bussei Blues, Tats
Iwahashi and Shun Nakayama; Sim-
pson church, Beans Yamamoto;

Henry Sakaguchl; Brighton, Nobe
