He Lived Through Mighty Lively,
Lusty Days Of That Old Town
An issei old timer here might
remember JimmieKiyosbiMayeda
of Trinidad.
The then young Jimmie Kiyoshi
Mayeda, 50 years ago, began oper-
ating a restaurant down in Trini-
dad, a mining town south of Pue-
blo, just across New Mexico bor-
der.
Thirty years before Jimmie Ki-
yoshi's arrival in die town, it bad
served as way-station for the old
Santa Fe Trail out of Missouri,
via La Junta.
A half century ago, thatsouthem
Colorado town was a lusty, thriv-
ing community. Miners and farm-
ers used to come into town to shop,
eat, and make merry carousel.
Jimmie's eatery was probably
right in the thick of it.
Fifty years ago, there were per-
haps more than 200 Japanese min-
ers, formers and shop keepers
in that area. Now, you'd have dif-
ficulty counting a dozen Japanese
in the whole, sprawling Las Ani-
mas county down there.
Since die shuttering of many
mines there some years ago, things
have never been the same for those
folks. Jimmie Kiyoshi Mayeda fin-
ally quit serving up meals and re-
tired a few years ago.
Last week, in Trinidad at the
Mullare Funeral Chapel, sorrow-
ful friends of Jimmy bade him
farewell. He was 76. He is sur-
vived by a brother somewhere
in Japan. There was no mention
of his survivors in Trinidad, or
in Colorado.

shi of Ault to Joseph Nakagawa of

ver.

Mr. and Mrs. Kunisaburo Aka-
hoshi, and Mr. Nakagawa is the
son of Mrs. Nakagawa and the late
Kakutaro Nakagawa.
ORGANIZE KARA-TE
ACADEMY HERE
Tang Soo Do, Danford J. Grave-
stock and Charles Sereff plan to
establish a school for the instruc-
tion of Kara-te, a form of Japan-
ese art of self-defense against
opponents. Location for the acad-
emy, last week, had not been de-
termined.
Weary Of Good Words
An articulate Japanese theolo-
gian was among the many in at-
tendance here last week at the con-
vention of the United Church of
Christ. He was Dr. Masao
Takenaka, professor of Christ-
ian ethics at Doshisha University
in Kyoto, and visiting professor at
Union TheologicalSeminaryinNew
York City.
Said Dr. Takenaka: "People are
weary*of good words. People are
disinterested in abstract and meta-
physical questions. They are inter-
ested in practical and concrete
values."
KEY POSITIONS
Hank Tani was a lively, active
fellow in the pre-war days in San
Francisco and bay area, and later
in the post-war days in St. Louis,
Mo. He used to use up a portion
of his energies as St. Louis JACL
chapter, and as National JACL, of-
ficer.
Last week at The Hilton, a
Dr. Henry Tani of Philadelphia,
Pa., director of Christian Edu-
cation, was in attendance at die
General Synod of theUnited Church
of Christ. Hank Tani of the old
days, and Dr. Henry Tani, are of
course one and the same person-a
bit more distinguished looking now,
with the fringe of grey in his hair,
but still the same energetic fellow.
"So what do I do now?" Hank
repeated the question. "1 work on
programs and the preparation of
Nsne Three Winners
The young and old had "scads
of lakes and dams" to choose
from, and to catch the Big Trout.
Occasion was the Simpson
Church's fishing derby last Sun-
day. Carter Lake, however, was
the expeditions operational base,
where prizes and picnic food were
kept.
George Kuramoto won the fish-
ing prize in the adult division,
Yuki Nogami in the ladies' divi-
sion, and Danny Goto in the chil-
dren's division. But there were
other fishing prizes awarded on
one basis or another, and they
went to Tom Tanaka, Ed Shima-
buktiro, John Numoto, Meach No-
gami, Macy Tanaka and the Rev.
Paul Hagiya.

people of the church."
"There are other nisei, in the
United Church organization.
There's Rev. Dr. Yoshio Fuku-
yama. I think he's originally from
the west coast. He's director of
research of the Homeland Minis-
try. Then, there's Rev. Dr. Gary
Oniki. Forgot where he's from,
originally, but he's the director of
race relations unit of the Council
on Social Action. They work in our
New York City headquarters of-
fice.
"They're both reverends. But
me? No."
About the only Denver nisei he
had seen was Bob Uyeda. "Knew
him from the old days in San r=**-
Francisco when we worked with
Boy Scouts."
