The Forum
The late President Kennedy, in
one of his last official acts before
his assassination, signed an order
for the release of the Calexico,
Calif.-born, Tomoya Kawakita. He
had been convicted and imprison-
ed back in 1948 of treasonable
brutality to American war pri-
soners during World War II.
Kawakita, 43, who had been a
prisoner at McNeil Island federal
prison in Washington state, was
pardoned on condition that he go
back to Japan. He had returned
to the U.S. in 1946 when he was
recognized by an American who
had been held in the World War
U prisoner camp in Japan, and sub-
sequently was arrested.
The Rev. Donald Toriumi of the
Presbyterian Church in Pasadena,
Calif., initiated the current effort
to obtain Presidential pardon for
Kawakita. His original death sen-
tence was commuted to life im-
prisonment by President Eisen-
hower in 1953.________________
