Persons And Places
A helpful Sedgwick sansei, ob-
viously a veteran of crappie fish-
ing at Jumbo reservoir, advises
that the way to enjoy fishing up
there is to be booted with ice-
gripper attachments, wear insu-
lated clothing, go armed with steel
bars for chopping ice, and an edu-
cated pole. This suggestion might
well encourage Harry Kojima of
Denver to shorten his convales-
cence at Rose Memorial Hospi-
tal.

hospital patients: Mrs. Chitsuko
Iwasaki and Sam Sasaki of Hender-
son at Mercy, Fumio Hisamoto at

He Homesteaded In Dakota Badlands
bidding alien homesteaders.
Pago 2
(Continued from last week,)
* Cheerful Ben Kitagawa, 88, one-
time North Dakota homesteader,
having faced his share of adven-
ture, happiness and sorrows, now
contendedly lives the sunset of his
life in Denver.
His first wife died at childbirth
when their daughter, now Sister
Bernadetta of the Catholic High
School in Dubuque, Iowa, was bom.
He soon returned to Japan tobring
back his second bride, by whom
his other children were born. She
died in 1936. Kitagawa also rais-
ed a nephew, Tokutaro Slocum,
now of Fresno, Calif., the World
War I veteran.
Kitagawa was an eager 21 when
he first left Japan, arrived at
Vancouver, B.C., and headed down
to Seattle. There he got on an
Great Northern Railway extra gang
which worked its way eastward.
Ben passed up western Washington
and Montana, got off the gang work
in Minot, N.D.
He soon latched on to a 640-
acre section in Tioga, 70 miles
west of Minot, where he home-
steaded a wheat farm. Any 21-year-
old sansei game for homesteading?
Tioga is in the historically rich
Badlands of western part of the
state, north of mighty Missouri
River, not too far from Ft. Abra-
ham Lincoln. Gen. George Custer
led his troops from that fort on
his ill-fated campaign against
Montana Indians, and that not too
.many years before Kitagawa's ar-
rival In the state. His big spread
was also scant miles from Theo-
dore Roosevelt's ranching opera-
tions begun, long before his Presi-
dency, when he came out west from
New York City, grieving the death
of his first wife.
Within a couple of years, Ben was
forced out of his homestead be-
cause of the then state laws for-
Top Drawer Swimmer
Adams City HarveyNakagawa,
16, is one of the top drawer mem-
bers of AdamsCity High School
swimming team. A junior, son of
the Frank Nakagawas, he had won
two firsts and one second place in
the 200-yd. freestyle events of
initial three inter-school meets
of the season.
Another sansei team member
is Lee Kondo, a sophomore, who
often appears in the 50 yd. free-
style and relay events.
Harvey follows the footsteps of
his older brother, Melvin, three-
year letterman swimmer, who also
played backfield in the football
squad. Now a frosh at CSU in Ft.
Collins, Melvin holds the Adams
City High freestyle record of 1:48,
the very same event in which Bro-
ther Harvey also has been making
his marks this year.
