Butsudan Arrives
Gold foiled and lacquered shrine,
its roof and base together weigh-
ing nearly four tons, arrived from
Kyoto at the Buddhist Church last
week. Yoshitaka Tamai, emeritus
priest, thumbing through volumi-
nous pages of export manifests
accompanying the shipment, said
Sam Suekama is in charge of erec-
tion of the Butsudan.
Shipments of attachments were
received periodically from Kyoto
last year, and few more fittings
are expected. When installation
of the $30,000 Butsudan is complet-
ed, it is expected to be one of the
most elaborate among Buddhist
altars in the U.S.
The church ordered crafting of
this altar through the HonpaHong-
wanji temple in Kyoto. Its Rev. B.
Kuwatsuki, chief of its overseas
affairs, attached a transmittal let-
ter with the shipment to the Rev.
Tamai.

Rocky Ford Vera Lofgren,
manager of the Onion Cooperative
said Jim Hiraki, who planted 45
acres of seed onions before a re-
cent snowfall, was among the early
planters, and that many other
growers are expected to begin
within the next ten days.
Naturally, growers hold diver-
gent theories about early onion
plantings, Lofgren said. Seeds may
fail to germinate, for instance,
in cold soil too early in the sea-
son. Unpredictability of weather
is an all-important factor.
Rocky Ford -The Arkansas Val-
ley, JACL chapter on Feb. 8 serv-
ed more than 1,100 plates of chow
