Elections Held
Weld county Councilmanic elec-
tions were held yesterday in 20
communities. Results were not
known as of this morning.
At Keenesburg, biennial town
election for councilmen was a mat-
ter of high interest among voters.
At the election, however, incum-
bent Sam Okada did not seek re-
election.
In Kersey, Sam Sameshima was
one of the councilmanic candidates.
NEBRASKANS who attended fun-
eral services for the late Mrs.
Sai Saito at the Buddhist Church
last week included Mrs. Harukichi
Sato, Roger Sato, Takashi Kano,
Henry Hayano, Mrs.ShigesukeHa-
yano and Mr. and Mrs. SasukeHo-
saka.
Spring In Yananashi
Recent departees to Japan in-
clude: Dr. and Mrs. Genta Naka-
mura, Mr. and Mrs. Tokushi Ichi-
kawa; and members of the Harry
Matoba tour group, including the
Tamasaburo Yagamis of Swink,
Tsunesuke Fujimoto, Mrs. Fumiko
Hanna, Paul Goh of Greeley, and
Mrs. Shizue Huffman who departs
April 20.
Yamanashi, Japan, is the desti-
nation of the Nakamuras and the
Ichikawas; the Nakamuras having
joined a tour group in Los Angel-
es, and returning to Denver by
May 4. Ichikawas are traveling
on their own arrangement.

Lions Club-sponsored spelling
contest was eighth grader Cindy
Hayano, and contest winner was
Marianne Duncan, seventh grader.
The parents of Cindy, who also
tied for third in written contest,
are the Henry Hayanos of Henry.
Cindy and Marianne out-spelled
more than' 200 spellers Cindy
winning a medal and Marianne,
the top trophy. Written contest win-
ners included Carol Yamamoto
of Lyman, second; and a three-
way tie for third place among Tim
Hara of Mitchell Valley, Tom Stir-
rat of Scottsbluff, and Cindy.
PTA ELECTION Mrs. George
Uyemura was elected third vice
president of the Ft. Lupton PTA

president, Dr, James Galvin has
announced the appointment of An-
gela Adams, from England, as pro-
gram director and manager for the
establishment.
Local Problens
La Junta -TheGovernor's Local
Affairs Study Commission conven-
ed here recently. The members,
including Sam Mizokami of Blanca,
conferred with officials and indi-
viduals of the Arkansas Valley con-
cerning their community and local
governmental problems.
One of the opinions they fre-
quently expressed to the commis-
sion members was that they want-
ed county commissioners to be
empowered with more authority,
particularly for determining wel-
fare costs and salaries for local
governmental staff positions.
A WASHINGTON D.C. District
Court last week ordered payments
that may amount to nearly $6,
400.000 to about 3,000 depositors
in the pre-war Sumitomo and Yo-
kohama Specie banks, the Pacific
Citizen reported. This is a com-
promise settlement of a claim
which originally totaled over $15,
400.000 the paper reported.
SIM TOGASAKI, owner of Mutual
Supply Co. in San Francisco re-
ported that until the current or-
der for the judo tatami, Denver
Judo Schools order a few years
ago for 181 was the biggest pur-
chase made. Now, he said, that
Denver order is topped by the pur-
chase of 246 judo mats by the New
York Worlds Fair enough to
cover over 4,400 square feet.

MONTREAL, CANADA Cardi-
nal Paul Emile Leger of the Mon-
treal diocese spoke in Japanese at
the dedicaton of the $150,000 St.
Paul Ibaraki Japanese Catholic
Mission.
A one-time missionary priest
in Japan, Cardinal Leger encour-
aged his listeners to teach their
children the Japanese language
and custom. The mission, in a city
heavily populated by people of
French descent, will hold class-
es in the French and Japanese
languages on Saturdays. A little
over 800 Japanese Canadians live
in Montreal.

Westminster The other day,
the Rotary Club invited severa-
visiting foreign students to dinner
to observe the clubs International
Understanding Week. Guests in-
cluded Lt. Masaolgure from Osaka
and a couple of Vietnamese stu-
dent nurses who are studying at
Colorado General Hospital.
Lieutenant Igure, a Nippon air
force armament officer, is study-
ing electronics atLowry Air Force
Base.
To round out the international
motif the official informant con-
cerning the officer from Osaka was
Tech. Sgt. Zia Kazerooni at the
Air Force base. While Lowrys
phone operator identified the ser-
geants unit as the Foreign Liai-
son office, the sergeant, a native
of Iran, explained that the correct
identification of his office is now
Allied Training Branch.
Betrothal Of Couple Announced
Mr. and Mrs. Harry K. Mizoue
and Mr. and Mrs.KazuoSakamoto,
as the baishakunins, announced the
betrothal of Miss Janice Aoyagi
to Floyd Ito last Friday. The an-
nouncement was made at dinner
given for the couple at the Ake-
bono Restaurant.
Her parents aretheHarryAoya-
gis of 2885 Dahlia St., and the
groom-to-bes parents are the
Henry Itos of 3444 Race St. The
couple are June graduating sen-
iors. Janice is an education ma-
jor at CSC in Greeley, and Floyd
is at Colo. School of Mines in
Golden. While the bride-elect plans
to teach in a Jefferson county
school next September, Ito, with a
second lieutenants commission,
will serve in the Army Corps of
Engineers shortly following grad-
uation.

Pastor's Mother-In-Law,'Nother Of Year'
A couple of weeks ago, a san-
sei Quaker pastor, KennethKuma-
zawa of Newberg, Ore., visited
with his mother-in-law, Mrs, John
M. Retherford, of 4661 Eliot st.,
Colorados 1964 Mother of the
Year, Her husband, the Rev. Reth-
erford, is pastor of the First Den-
ver Friends Church, a denomina-
tion founded by George Fox in Eng-
land in the mid- 17th century.
The Rev. Kumazawa's wife,
Patsy, 23, school teacher in New-
berg, is one of the Retherfords*
three daughters. The Kumazawas
were married in 1962 while they
were students at the George Fcoc
College in Newberg. He graduated
last year. His maternal grand-
mother, Mrs. Nagayama, resides
in Medford, Ore.
Mrs. Retherfords experiences
would fill a book. Twelve years
ago, the Retherfords were in Af-
rica, where the Rev. Retherford
was in charge of 600 Friends
churches in Kenya, Tanganyika and
Uganda. There they not only sur-
vived the bloody Mau Mau upris-
ings, but made many lasting friends
among natives.
The Frank Kunio Yashirofamily
of 4975 Newton St., Mrs. Rether-
ford said, is a member of the
Friends Church in North Denver.
They have two daughters and a boy.
More donors to the Colo. Ni-
honjin Kai welfare fund was an-
nounced by its chairman Seishiro
Nakamura. The fund committee re-
cently reported the amount then

has never been associated with the
Joe Newcomer Finance Co., itwas
stated by James A. Smith, presi-
dent of the judo school, in cor-
recting a recent item in the Jiho.
From January to October, 1963,
the school was associated with the
Financial Securities, Corp. Last
November, this relationship was
dissolved. When the Newcomer
firm was declared insolvent last
year, it was learned that he was
a stockholder of Financial Securi-
ties, and this company also was
declared insolvent, Mr. Smith ex-
plained.
The Judo School, which has over
100 members, also serves the Ent
USAF base and die Police Depart-
ment here.
