ICS Names Council Panel Member
Ken Tagawa of CU was named
acting chairman of the Inter-Col-
legiate Student Conference at
Peaceful Valley Lodge last week-
end. He heads a coordinating Com-
mittee composed of delegates from
the several campuses: Jane Ida
and Donna Uyemura from CU, Ca-
role Uyemura from CSC in Gree-
ley, Ron Murata and Linda Naka-
mura from CSU in Ft. Collins.
Joan Sakyo, senior, at CSC, was
named the ICS'er of the year. Guest
speaker was Jack Mayeda, admin-
istrative assistant at National
JACL headquarters in San Fran-
cisco.
IN SAN JOSE
Mrs. KimiKato, religious chair-
man and representative of the Tri-
State Buddhist Church PTA Coun-
cil, and Mrs. NoboruTsunoda were
delegates at the Sunday School Con-
vention in San Jose, Calif.
Mountain Climbers
Boulder Physiological pro-
blems in the high altitude was
discussed by Dr. William Taka-
hashi Apr. 23 in the lecture ser-
ies on basic mountaineering spon-
sored by the Colo. Mtn. Club. The
pediatrician is the medical con-
sultant for the Rocky Mtn. Rescue
Group.
Hideo Sasaki, professor of land-
scape architecture and regional
planning at Harvard University,
was a member of the panel dis-
cussion on "New Frontiers in Re-
gional and Urban Development"
at the Brown Palace Hotel Satur-
day.
Sasaki is also with the land-
scape architecture and planning
firm of Sasaki, Walker and As-
sociates of Watertown, Mass., the
company hired by CU in Boulder
as consultant on the campus de-
sign and planning.
CONCLAVE IN PITTSBURGH
The Rev. Paul Hagiya of Simp-
son Methodist Church is a minis-
terial delegate from die Pacific
Japanese Provisional Conference
attending the denomination's gen-
eral conference inPittsburgh, Pa.,
Apr. 25-May 10, The nisei lay de-
legate will be Tosh Terazawa of
Los Angeles. They will discuss
and vote on such issues as unit-
ing the church with the United
Evangelical Brethren Church and
the issuance of a new hymn book.
DELEGATE Helen Goto flew to
Los Angeles last week-end as
delegate from Simpson Church to
attend the WSCS conference in West
Los Angeles.
Ten prefectural governors from
Japan and their wives were guests
of Gov. and Mrs. John LoveSatur-
day for a brief sightseeing tour.
The visitors, after an hour's stop-
over, flew to Kansas City to ren-
devous with the gubernatorial party
spokesman, Gov. Yutaro Azuma of
Tokyo. He had been visiting in New
York City.
The ten governors led by deputy
spokesman, Gov. Yoshio Miura of
Miyagi, and their party had break-
fasted that morning in Idaho, per-
haps in Boise,and lunched in Salt
Lake City. The entire party will
disband in New York City, some
of them going home via Europe,
others via South America.
Rotarian Visitor
San Francisco-born KiyoshiTo-
gasaki of Tokyo was scheduled to
speak at the Lakewood Country
Club Tuesday at the Lakewood
Rotary Club dinner. Its presi-
dent, J. Stewart Moore said ar-
rangements for Togasaki's pre-
sence was made by Bill Hoso-
kawa, a member of the host club.
The visitor, who is a director of
the Rotary International for the
1963-65 term, was enroute from
speaking engagements in Great
Falls, Mont., to Columbia, Mo.
The visitor was alsoMoore's guest
last week-end at the district Ro-
tary conference in the Broadmoor
Hotel in Colorado Springs.

Two sanseis are with the U.S.
Marine Corps. Pvt. Akio Matsu-
naga recently completed his train-
ing. Meanwhile, Bryan T. Yamau-
chi is a new Marine enlistee. He
is the son of the Hiroshi M. Ya-
mauchis of 2242 Osceola St. Akio
is tiie son of the T. Matsunagas
of 3524 Larimer St.

'Fine Ingredients In Melting Pot'
The Ft. Collins Coloradoan's
issue of April 19 published an
editorial, "Fine Ingredients in

"One of the most outstanding
success stories in American his-
tory has been written by the
issei ", the editorial stated, in
connection with the recent $100,000
Carnegie Corp. grant to UCLA's
issei immigrant history project.
In making the grant, the Carne-
gie Corp. stated that "As a his-
tory of their (the isseis') difficul-
ties and achievements and finally
their integration into American
society, the book will make a sig-
nificant contribution to the Amer-
ican historical record. It will also
provide an understanding of these
phenomena which, the JACL be-
lieves, can help persons and or-
ganizations working with other
handicapped minorities in the
United States and possibly even in
other nations."
Mrs. Helen M. Morimitsu of
Ft. Collins called the Jiho's atten-
tion to this editorial. She is the
wife of Sueo Sam Morimitsu, son
of the late George S. Morimitsu
and Mrs. Toi Morimitsu of Brigh-
ton.

Festival Activities
Preliminary activities are pop-
ping up in connection with the Den-
ver-Takayama Sister City Festi-
val Aug. 12-15 here. Frank Tori-
zawa, vice-chairman of the festi-
val's working committee, emplan-
ed Saturday for Takayama, Japan,
to confer with Mayor Shinichiro
Iwamoto. He was accompanied by
Noboru Sugimoto of Imperial Room <
in the Cosmopolitan HoteL
Then, there's to be the festival
benefit cooking school May 22 at
the Denver Hilton Hotel. That
school will feature Chef Ishizaka
of the Yamato restaurant in San
Francisco. He will demonstrate
the art of making suki-yaki. Pat-
rons of the event includes Mrs.
John Love and Mrs. Tom Curri-
gan, Mrs. May Torizawa, Japan
Airlines, the Japan Food Corp. of
San Francisco, and the Yamato
restaurant. Mrs. A. T. Haley,
chairman of theDenver-Takayama
Sister City Committee, is in charge
of this cooking school.
KNIGHT COMMANDER Duane
Hasegawa, 16, a junior in East,
High School, was installed as knight
commander of Gamma Mu Court,
Order of Crusades, national honor-
ary leadership fraternity in the
First Baptist Church lastweek.He
is the son of the Tom Hasegawas
of 3358 Milwaukee St.
Omaha Actities
Omaha Eleven 1000 Club mem-
bers were reported by Bob Naka-
doi, JACL chapter's club chair-
man.

Cecil Ishii is to interview them.
Roy Hirabayashi will serve as
interpreter.
Bill and Janice Palmer were
married on April 11. The bride's
parents are past Pres. Cecil Ishff
of the chapter and Mrs. Ishii.
Queen Of Lei Dance
Greeley Ruby Hasegawa from
Molokai was the Queen of Lei
Dance recently in the Gunter Hall
at CSC. Her attendants were Jo
Ann Kondo, Kathy Aquino, Karen
Ito, Jeanne Higashi, Karen Agader
and Betty Okimoto.
HEAD. BOY Roger Goto, was
elected head boy for the coming
year at Adams City High School.
His parents are George and Helen

Top Art Prize Won
Boulder A sculpture, AUe-
mande," created by Mamoru Sato
received top award at the 9th
annual Intercollegiate Art Exhibit
last week at the Memorial Center.
Sato, a CU graduate student in
fine arts, expects to receive Mas-
ter of Fine Arts degree next sum-
mer, then go on to a fine arts
teaching career in college.
Currently, exhibits of his works
are displayed at The Gallery of
Boulder and at the Henderson Gal-
lery on CU campus. The works
exhibited include intaglios, re-
quiring lithograph ink and crayon
on limestones, and copper and zinc
etchings. Of the various forms of
art, Sato's favorite is sculpture.
He is the son of Tetsuro Sato
of Thornton, and his wife, Lois,
is the daughter of the Sto Tanis of
Denver.
MERRYMAKERS PlatteviUe -
Denver's recent Garden Show at-
tracted members of Merrymakers,
including the Frank Yamaguchis
and the Harry Nishimotos.
Reunion Held
Back in the early '30's, a student
at DU used to augment his re-
sources byteachingNihongo-down
at Rocky Ford and over in Sedg-
wick. Last week, that student,
Keizo Ono, now managing director
of Tokyo's Daito Woolen Spinning
and Weaving Mill, returned to meet
some of his former students. Thus,
he met in Sedgwick, Kansuke Ki-
noshita, Kuichi Inouye, Setsuichi
Kobayashi and others.
Back in those years, between
Christmas and New Year's day, he
also used to help Mrs. Tatsuno
Oka's family sweat out and pound
out the mochi.
SUGAR BEET CROP is a major
product on many nisei farms. Bill
and Yukio Sameshima of Eaton last
season harvested 171.2 acres on
three farms. They were among
High Ten producers in 1959 and in
1961. In Prospect Valley, near
Keenesburg, Walter Williams and
Kanichi Okada last year topped
production in area with 36.58 aver-
age tons per acre. He was one of
the 13 beet growers honored re-
cently at Denver Chamber of Com-
merce Agricultural Recognition

People And Places
A pair of new arrangements
% have been made in the 10-year-
old program of inviting young men
from Nippon to observe and to ex-
perience American farming tech-
niques. The 111 who arrivedinSan
Francisco last week are to be sent
to farms for a year in Oregon and
Iowa as well as California. In pre-
vious years, they were confined to
; farms in the Golden State.
Also under the same program,
and through the good offices of the
Dos Palos, Calif., rice grower-,
distributor, Keisaburo Koda, a
group of Brazilian nisei farmers
are to arrive soon to learn about
American farming methods. Koda
became interested in them during
his visit last autumn with the Ja-
' panese in Brazil,
There are over 430,000 Japan-
ese, half of them niseis and san-
seis, in that politically and econo-
mically harrassed country.
Two Thespians
Dennis Morita is a member of the
cast of the play in rehearsal now,
"The Ramshackle Inn. The mys-
tery-comedy is to be a presentation
of the junior-senior classes of
Highland High in Greeley.
Meanwhile at Lafayette High
Friday, Ann Yoshihara played the
role of Ernestine in the play,
"Cheaper By The Dozen."
GRADUATING Ft. Lupton -
Bill Watada, a graduating senior
at Ft. Lupton High, is president
of the "L" Club; member of the
Drama Club, football, wrestling,
and baseball teams.

Baseball League Officials Will Confer
One of the oldest nlsei-sansei
athletic organization hereabouts,
the No. Colo. Nisei Baseball Lea-
gue, is about to resume play for the
umpteenth season. Hard to find a
fella who knows, for sure.
Friday night at 8 p.m., League
Pres. Eugene Tochihara is call-
ing a meeting of teams and team
reps at the Buddhist Church. Both
senior and peewee division teams
last summer accounted for about
200 players and coaches in games
each-Sunday at diamonds scattered
between Greeley and Denver. Team
reps should be buzzing Eugene, if
they haven't yet done so (at 255-
5223) to let him know about their
playing intentions and rosters. Out
of town teams may write to him at
2655 Champa st.
"THE JACL of La Junta scored
2800 in the Class A event in the
recent Colo. Women's Bowl Cham-
pionships here, it was reported.
Other scores at the tourney: Mits
Nakagawa-625 in singles; from La-
Junta, Amy Konishi-1773 in All-
Events.
TITLE TROPHY Loveland -
Tom Urano is a member of the
Northern Colo. Traveling League
bowling team which won the cham-
pionship trophy for the second
year in a row. The team receiv-
ed the award at the league ban-
quet here last week.
GYMNASTICS In the Rocky
Mountain AAU Gymnastics Cham-
pionships at North High recently,
Gene Takamine of East High plac-
ed fourth in the all-around event,
and was timed at 82.7 on the long
horse.
TRACK MEET Ken Sato of
Sheridan High placed fourth in
shotput at the track meet among
his school. Mullen, FCI and Lu-
theran, His brother, Allen, parti-
cipated in the 180 low hurdles.
ORCHESTRA Westminster -
District 50 elementary school
honor orchestra's concert pre-
sented Monday at Ranum High in-
cluded Sammie Dee Nakazono, a
member of the double string quar-
tet.

The Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee- has 'approved the
designs for the medals to be awarded to winners of the various
events at the forthcoming Tokyo Olympic Games next Pall. The
designs were executed in .plaster at the Osaka Mint Bureau, in
accordance with the design officially determined since the Ninth
Amsterdam Olympiad in 1928. The face of the medal features the
