Court Takes Action
A naturalized issei Denverite
who over-stayed the statutory lim-
it of three years back at his home-
town in Japan, decided to return
here. But the U.S. State Depart-
ment, having issued to him a no-
tice of lapse of his citizenship,
denies him permission to come
back to Denver.
To an issei in this predicament,
the U.S. Supreme Court last week
had an answer. It declared uncon-
stitutional the naturalization law
that lifted naturalized Americans
abroad of citizenship.
In Denver, Lloyd D. Prowell,
deputy director of the U.S. Immi-
gration and Naturalization Service
said the court was referring to
Section 352 of Public Law 414, the
McCarran Act. He did not know
whether there are Colorado Isseis
in Japan who are in this predica-
ment, since the matter isnotwith-
in the jurisdiction of his depart-
ment, but in that of the State De-
partment.

Three-fourths of some 20 grad-
uating senior sanseis at CSC in
Greeley last June were from Ha-
waii. Also last year, two-thirds of
some 30 sansei students attending
3SU in Ft. Collins were from the
islands*
At CU in Boulder, however, the
Hawaii sans£i senior graduates
last year were outnumbered by the
mainland sanseis, mostlyColorad-
oans by some two and a half to one
ratio. Nonetheless, this influx of
Hawaii sandeis to these local col-
leges served to acquaint the main-
land sansei students with the young
people from the islands.
A few years ago at CSC, Leo
Sunada, a Coloradoan and a mem-
ber of the Tau Kappa Epsilon
bouse, served as president of the
Hawaiian Club on the campus. He
vas also vicepresident of the Stu-
ient Council. That was in 1960.
Sunada, whose brother is Dr.
Cayo Sunada, staff member of the
state Training School in Arvada,
Is serving a two-year term as an
instructor at a U0S. military de-
pendents* school in Dreux, near
Peris, France. He left the position
*s vice principal of an elementary
school in La Salle to go overseas.
His experiences in France have not
seen confined to teaching, for he
las traveled extensively in Eur-
ope, including attendance at the
Ninter Olympics early this year
it Innsbruck, Austria.

Cultivation of 'potato plants is
the concern of growers, this time
of the year, from northern Colo-
rado to the Arkansas and San
Luis VaUeys.
In Greeley, County extension
horticulturist Charles Urano con-
siders the wireworms to be one of
the most destructive to growing
potato vines. Theyre hard to de-
tect, he explained, and difficult to
control. These worms emerge in
Spring from die soil, mate and pro-
duce eggs. The females deposit
as many as 3,000 eggs, which
hatch within a few days.
Among many of the states grow-
ers of the Irish cobbler variety
is Jim Hasui in Las Animas,
Arkansas Valley. A few weeks
ago, according to Jack Gramich,
valley potato grower and contrac-
tor, Hasui has planted at the seed-
ing rate of l,900poundstotheacre,
and 500 pounds of fertilizer to the
acre.
Conference Disbands
Simpson Methodist Church In
Denver has been a member of the
Pacific Japanese Provisional Con-
ference, which convenes this week-
end for the last time in San Fran-
cisco. Upon the return of its pas-
tors and the delegates, Tol Taka-
mine and Mary Fujii, the local
church will join the ColoradoMeth-
odist Conference.
With this conference, the provi-
sional organization disbands, per-
mitting its 31 churches and their
members to join their respective
local Caucasian Methodist confer-
ences.
Modest Methodist mission pro-
gram for the isseis began back in
the mid 1870s in San Francisco.
An early mission worker in Bay
City was Kanichi Miyama of a
samurai family, who had put aside
his swords to come to America in
1876. By 1900, the Pacific Japan-
ese mission was organized. When
the conference disbands this week-
end, the Rev. Dr. Donald H. Tip-
pett, Methodist Bishop of San Fran-
cisco to whose jurisdiction the con-^
ference has been entrusted, will
dismiss the delegates for die last
time.
