Greetings,
The enclosed Directory of Ninth Street Historic Park, 1924-1973 was prepared for Dr. Blea and her Chicano Studies students at Metropolitan State College who will be interviewing "survivers" of Ninth Street. The Directory may help them locate, identify and interview former residents of Ninth Street. 770 residents are cited.
The Directory was prepared with the aid of only two sources: Denver Householder's Directory and Denver City Directory for the period 1924-1973. Additional research and interviews must take place to verify those two sources.
The enclosed Directory joins the previous Directory of Ninth Street Historic Park, 1871-1900 to provide combined listings of 1,300 residents of Ninth Street. Both Directories contain an alphabetical "People Directory" and a chronological "House Directory". The period between 1900 and 1924 is covered sporadically.
For historical, architectural and landscape description of Ninth Street Historic Park, the user of this Directory may want to see the Green Thumb, vol 34, no 1, p 11-22, Spring 1977 for an article entitled "Self-Guided Tour in 9th Street Gardens." It was prepared for the Denver Botanic Gardens.

A NOTE TO THE USER
Luebbers
page 3
Only two sources of information were used to compile this Directory. I.started with the Denver Householder's Directory of 1924 (volume 1) and took notes thru 1973. There are some gaps in this publication, such as 1943 and 1944 when the war effort precluded its publication. Missing years ares pre-1924, 1926, 1943, 1944, 1946, 1949, 1952, 1955, 1970. The Householder's Directories list adults with wives listed in parentheses, omitting most children. After 1958, the Householder's Directories included only the head-of-household, omitting wives. The user will need to search further for
names of children and wives and their occupations. Additionally, I am convinced that many errors of spelling, residency, etc. occur in the Householder's Directories as well as the City Directories. Be warned that "Nato" may be spelled "Nito", "Nieto", etc.
The Casa Mayan Restaurant that operated from 1948 thru Oct 1973 was housed in the Gonzalez(s) home at 1020 9th Street. Yet, both Householder's and City Directories spell Gonzales(z) variously. After 40 years on 9th Street, you would think that Gonzales(z)
would be spelled consistently correct. Beware of other errors.
Once a list of residents had been conlpiled from the Householder's Directories, I compared that list with individual names to be found in the Denver City Directory.
The City Directory provided names of wives, occupational data, etc. Also, conflicting information was found.
A more indepth study of these 9th Street residents is possible. See newspaper
index files at Western History and State Historical Society Library. Seek marriage,
death, birth, etc. information there and elsewhere. Make your efforts known to the excellent staff at these two remarkable libraries so that they may help you. See also deeds & titles to property for further indepth study.

HOUSE DIRECTORY
The House Directory puts the people into their home in chronological order as suggested by the People Directory. Each house is assigned a name, including those destroyed. Because the Household Directories and City Directories made errors, don't expect a complete listing of everybody who lived on Ninth Street nor correct assignment to residence. If you discover errors and know what the correct information should be, please pencil in the correct data. Much thanks.

TO: Maxine Benson, Curator Documentary Resources Colorado Historical Society Eleanor Gehres, Head Western History Department Denver Public Library Greetings, David J. 78 South Jackson Denver, CO 80209 Feb 27, 1982 page 2 The enclosed Directory of Ninth Street Historic Park, 1924-1973 was prepared for Dr. Blea and her Chicano Studies students at Metropolitan State College who will be interviewing "survivers" of Ninth Street. The Directory may help them lobate, identify and interview former residents of Ninth Street. 770 residents are cited. The Directory was prepared with the aid of only two sources: Denver Householder's Directory and Denver City Directory for the period 1924-1973. Additional research and interviews must take place to verify those two sources. The enclosed Directory joins the previous Directory of Ninth Street Historic Park. 1871-1900 to provide combined listings of 1,300 residents of Ninth Street. Copy to: Dr. Blea, MSC Auraria Libraries, Archives Historic Denver, Inc Carolyn & Don Etter

PAGE 3

A NOTE TO THE USER Luebbers page 3 Only two sources of information were used to compile this Directory. I started with the Denver Householder's Directory of 1924 (volume 1) and took notes thru 1973. There are some gaps in this publication, such as 1943 and 1944 when the war effort precluded im publication. Missing years are: pre-1924, 1926, 1943, 1944, 1946, 1949, 1952, 1955, 1970. The Householder's Directories list adults with wives listed in parentheses, omitting most children. After 1958, the Householder's Directories included only the head-of-household, omitting wives. The user will need to search further for names of children and wives and their occupations.. Additionally, I am convinced that many errors of spelling, residency, etc. occur in the Householder's Directories as well as the City Directories. Be warned that "Nato" may be spelled "Nito", "Nieto", etc. The Casa Mayan Restaurant that operated from 1948 thru Oct 1973 was housed in the Gonzalez(s) horne at 1020 9th Street. Yet, both Householder's and City Dir'ectories spell Gonzales(z) variously. After 40 years on 9th Street, you would think that Gonzales(z) would be spelled consistently correct. Beware of other errors. Once a list of residents had been compiled from the Householder's Directories, I compared that list with individual names to be found in the Denver City Directory. The City Directory provided names of wives, occupational data, etc. Also, conflicting information was found. A more indepth study of these 9th Street residents is possible. See newspaper index files at Western History and State Historical Society Library. Seek marriage, death, birth, etc. information there and elsewhere. Make your efforts known to the excellent staff at these two remarkable libraries so that they mqy help you. See also deeds & titles to property for further indepth study.
