Abstract:
There is an ongoing debate on the merit of the United States Electoral College. For some, the Electoral College system represents a functional manifestation of the Founding Fathers’ intent to give a meaningful voice to each state, while others view the Electoral College as a distortion of democracy in which candidates without majority support can be elected. Several states, including Colorado, have now joined the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact in an attempt to circumvent the Electoral College system. Using data on the demographics of each state and its respective number of Electoral votes, we seek to determine which, if any, people groups in the United States are inequitably represented by the United States Electoral College.
