Abstract:
Colorado, despite being regarded as one of the healthiest states physically, is one of the top 5 states of non-medical use of prescription pain killers (Rockville, 2010). The opioid overdose rates are also high in Colorado, with 564 opioid involved overdose deaths were reported in 2018 (NSDU; NIH). One of the largest healthcare issues today is the opioid epidemic, which is rooted in a range of social factors. The goal of this study is to increase understanding of the opioid epidemic in Colorado by studying the recent trends and patterns of opioid overdose deaths and their relationship with social determinants of health in Colorado’s regions. This study has 3 objectives. The first is to investigate change in opioid overdose death age adjusted rates over time in Colorado’s regions by studying the progress of the opioid epidemic in the form of opioid overdose death data by region over time in Colorado. The second objective is to investigate characteristics of regions with highest overdose death age adjusted rates in recent years. The third objective is to investigate opioid overdose death age adjusted rates with selected regional social vulnerability index variables. After analyzing the CDC’s social vulnerability index (SVI) and opioid overdose death rates, it was found that 4 measures of social vulnerability (percent of households with no vehicles, percent of population in poverty, percent minority, and percent of civilians unemployed) significantly positively correlated with age adjusted opioid overdose death rates(p<.001). Data suggest non-medical social factors can have great effects to a population’s health, results from this study point to enlighten social factors that may adversely affect the opioid overdose death rates in Colorado’s regions.
