Studio portrait of José Julián Espinosa, a farmer in El Carnero (Saguache County), Colorado. Prior to moving to Colorado he served as a Captain of Calvary, in Company D, 1st Regiment, New Mexico Volunteers and later was elected to various Saguache County, Colorado, public offices. He wears a suit, vest and bow tie. He has white hair and a full beard and mustache.

From inventory: "José Julián Espinosa was born in 1829 in El Rito, New Mexico. In 1861 he was commissioned as Captain of Calvary, Company D, 1st Regiment, New Mexico Volunteers. He later moved to Taos and then El Carnero, Colorado where he held county offices as Deputy Assessor, Commissioner, and Justice of Peace in Saguache County. He died at age 83 in El Carnero."
